• Rules

Hello, commenter! Welcome to the conversation. Please remember these simple rules in order to keep this place pleasant.

    0) BE NICE

Read charitably. Remember that there’s another person, a real person, on the other side of the Internet. Do your best to engage in fruitful discussion. Whenever in doubt, ask yourself if you would say the same things in person.

Rule 0 is basically all you need, but in detail:

    1) RESPECT OTHER COMMENTERS

Keep disagreements civil. You are welcome to argue with other commenters as long as you are arguing with their points and not resorting to polemics. That goes for BOTH sides, no matter what. If you see an insulting comment, contact us.

    Insults will be immediately deleted.

    2) STAY ON TOPIC

Do your best to stay on the topic. We’ll understand if there’s a bit of side discussion, but we won’t tolerate derailing techniques (for more information, you can read Derailing for Dummies).

If something gets to the point of derailing, the comment will be edited with the disclaimer:

    [derailing]

Any comment after that that continues the conversation will be deleted, without exceptions.

    3) ASK FOR CLARIFICATION IN PRIVATE

If your comments are deleted, it’s because they were considered insulting or severely off topic. Don’t argue publicly for deleting your comments. If you’re really, genuinely puzzled as to why your comment was deleted, feel free to ask in a civil manner via the contact form.

(these rules are based on the excellent Go Make Me a Sandwich policy.)
