Over at Fugitivus, Harriet J writes this amazing piece about how not to respond when you find a new feminist blog which includes this awesome quote: “Have you perhaps considered taking the oppressor’s face in your hands, gently smoothing back hir hair, softly and sweetly whispering your message in hir ears with lots of words like “maybe” “sort of” and “I’m not blaming you”? I think the people who treat you horribly would be very receptive to that. Just my two cents.” Well worth a read. – wundergeek

Feministe responds to a recent New York Times article wherein the author refers to high school girls who take younger boys to the prom as “cougars:”  High-school-age girls who date boys a year or two younger are predatory and suspect. It’s more normal for them to date college-age men, because of course there is nothing at all sketchy about an adult man in college who wants to date a 15-year-old.  -Dymphna

Being the word geek that I am, I’m loving this post on Skepchick about the history of the word “bitch”. To me it’s expecially fascinating as it’s a word with a strong northern European origin, but no equivalent in Italian1 (nor in Latin, as far as I can remember from my Catullus), so it has a cultural history that I don’t share. Dear native speakers of languages who are not English readers, do you have word stories to share? – Giulia

    1. The equivalent word from the animal kingdom would be “troia”, the female pig, but it’s used more like “whore”, and never applied to men.

    About

I’m an occasional game illustrator, and game designer, long-time LARPer, and player of tabletop roleplaying games (mostly indie games). I have a terminal addiction to board games. I also play both PC and console games – mainly RPGs of all stripes, but I do enjoy puzzle games like Katamari as well. My main source of gaming notoriety, however, is the feminist gaming blog Go Make Me a Sandwich. In addition to being a cranky feminist blogger, I am a photographer and somewhat half-assed writer living in the wilds of Canada with a wonderful spouse and two slightly broken cats.
