This Week in Gaming

Over on the Wizards site, Jon Schindette wrote this lovely piece here that talked about the issue of sexism in game art in a whole bunch of defensive and unproductive ways, which was disappointing coming from the art director of D&D Next. Our very own Tracy Hurley posted a great response on her blog that looks at why Jon Schindette’s column is problematic and also says some interesting stuff about the Prismatic Art Project. Well worth a read. – wundergeek
As a nice counter-point, this piece here is from a Paizo employee about why inclusivity in game artwork is just plain good business sense. Now Paizo isn’t perfect; the diversity of female body-types could stand to be widened, and they still hire Wayne Reynolds way too damn often. But it’s definitely a very encouraging take on this issue. – wundergeek
I have talked about Matriarchy before, and here’s an update: the closed beta is now open to interested participants, so get in touch with Ben to get access to the game. – Giulia
Barbara Brathwaite nails the incredible power of gaming and game design to communicate important ideas. I want all these games to exist so I can play them and think about challenging events and learn things. Then I want to play them with my kids when the time is right. Watch her TEDtalk. – Meguey
Over at the Liwanag Press blog, Liam Burke (author of Dog Eat Dog) offers a reversal of the oft-asked question, “How do we attract more women in gaming?” with an insightful perspective on the content of our characters. – Giulia
