• Indie Games on Demand – PAX East, Origins, GenCon

Let me tell you about this cool project I’ve been a part of the past few years called Indie Games on Demand. You’ve probably never heard of us before, cause, y’know, we’re so indie.

The event started out as a series of games being run by indie fans and game designers at big conventions here and there. Then some brilliant minds got together to mold it, shape it, and rebuild it into the volunteer run event it has become. Indie Games on Demand has now expanded to run at a variety of conventions including Gencon, Origins, Dreamtion, PAX East, and PAX Prime, and is growing every year as a collaborative community effort to have small press games represented at these big events. We take over a few rooms, have GMs there ready to run a variety of games, and from there it’s players choice which game is played. I’ve had an awesome time playing and running games at these events, met a lot of cool new friends, and had a great experience exposing gamers to these games I love so much.

I’m heading up the Indie Games On Demand event at Origins Game Fair in Columbus Ohio along with a team of stellar GMs. Last year we held two days of events during the four day convention, and this year we’re going to be running for all four days! In a room bustling with game designers and game players alike, we played: Fiasco, Apocalypse World, Dungeon World, Technoir, The Dance and the Dawn, Tales of the Fisherman’s Wife, Ganakagok, InSpectres, Burning Wheel, and a variety of playtests, hacks, homebrews, and new games that people were testing out and having fun with. I expect many of the same games will be represented this year, along with some of the hot new releases that have just come out.

I’m posting this to raise awareness of our event, but also to get in touch with some women who’ve designed small press games. I’d love to run your games at these events. Do you have any handouts, scenarios, quick play kits, or possibly even prize copies of games that you’d be able to send me in order to support my efforts? Or any ideas that are really cool and helpful? Let me know! Be sure to contact people running the events at other conventions too, all their info is on the main site.

Here’s the rundown of upcoming conventions and dates:

    PAX East  April 6-8

    Origins  May 30 – June 3

    Gencon  August 16 – 19

If you’ll be at any of these cons, we’re still looking for players and GMs! Come roll with us.

Sweet! So here’s what I know about Gencon Games on Demand. It’s also on the Games on Demand website:
The event will be held in the Convention Center on the upper floor overlooking the Exhibitor hall. We’ll have our own 12 table room, giving us twice the space we had last year, in a more central location. To make best use of the space, we’ll be splitting the tables into both standard Games on Demand open gaming and scheduled games, taking tickets for both as we did last year (1 specific or generic ticket / 2 hour slot).

If you want to help out by running scheduled games or helping facilitate pick-up games, you could get a badge or discount coupons in return. Go here: http://www.indiegamesexplosion.org/contact-us/ to sign up.

Look forward to meeting some of you digital peeps in person! I’m gonna try my hardest to get to Gencon this year.

Oh man, I’m missing all of those! Didn’t get tickets in time for PAX East, Origins date change conflicts with a major trade show for work, and GenCon weekend is when my best friend is getting married. AUGH!

I will, however, tell my Ohio-based friends to give you a look during Origins!

Sometimes, life beats out awesome convention times. But thanks for sending your friends my way! You’ll have to tell me who you know in Ohio.

Meg! I won’t actually be at PAX, but Games on Demand will be! Steve Segedy, Terry Romero and John Stavropoulos will be headiing up the event at PAX.

Wish I could make it out though! Have all of the fun for me.
